Tobacco Prevention

Tobacco Program

The tobacco program at Central Valley was created based on The Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) Best Practices for comprehensive tobacco control programs.

The program is funded by grants through the Master Settlement Agreement  and the CDC.

The tobacco program works closely with The Jamestown Tobacco- Free Coalition in its efforts to educate and involve the community regarding tobacco related issues.

What We Do

Educate the public on the dangers of tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke.

Work with businesses to implement smoke-free policies in the workplace.

bullet

Provide scholarships for the Jamestown Hospital cessation program.

bullet

Distribute free Quit Kits throughout the community.

bullet

Employ counter-marketing and media advocacy strategies to combat tobacco industry influence.

bullet

Ensure compliance with laws restricting minors’ access to tobacco by assisting local law enforcement in conducting compliance checks.

bullet

Provide information to state and local policy makers and community members regarding current issues in tobacco control.

Our Mission

Encourage, assist, and support tobacco users who are making the transition to a healthy, tobacco-free lifestyle.

Eliminate the public’s exposure to secondhand smoke, the third leading cause of preventable death in the United States.

Educate and empower youth to remain tobacco-free.

Jamestown Tobacco-Free Coalition Committees

Public Education

Creates awareness within the community on the dangers of tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke via media and public speaking engagements.

Faith Not Tobacco

Faith groups uniting to educate and motivate the faith community in its efforts to reach parishioners regarding issues related to tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke.

Planning committee for events such as The Great American Smokeout, Kick Butts Day, Go Red Day, World No Tobacco Day,  etc…

Advocacy

Builds, motivates and activates grassroots action and support for tobacco related issues.

Spit Tobacco

Addresses the spit tobacco problem in our region by working with target groups with high prevalence, such as local baseball teams – youth through college level.

S.W.A.T.

Students Working Against Tobacco – a youth advocacy group of students from Jamestown High School.
